Beginning May 10th through June 14th, Terrence Rogers Fine Art is pleased to present the work of Michael Chapman.
Opening Reception: Michael Chapman captures a glimpse of time suspended and a surreal vision of southern California life. His paintings are easily recognized by the burnished, 1950-era automobiles parked on downtown streets, curbside at the beach and outside the squat bungalows and apartment buildings that he depicts. Direct quotations from art history and subtle references to film-noir inform each Chapman painting: Along familiar beachfronts, figures stroll and dogs walk as late afternoon light shimmers off the ocean; on downtown streets commuters and businessmen amble along their way; and in a room, empty but for a toaster, a plate of oranges and a table, sunlight pours through an open window. For over 15 years, Chapman has built his rich vocabulary of fantastic, emblematic imagery. In addition to automobiles – lampposts and parking meters, a chair and a playground slide -- are each a player acting their role in Chapman’s compositions. In this exhibition of 14 new paintings Chapman continues to expand and embellish all of these themes. Michael Chapman, a native of Orange County, California, lives and works in Fullerton, CA. This will be his fifteenth solo exhibition since 1987, his ninth in southern California. |
